Our
Sun CMEs and Solar Winds |
The NASA Endeavour Program at the NEIU-19
is a unique opportunity for seventh graders to conduct research and
investigate the same topics and issues NASA scientists currently study.
Students focused on the Sun and the NASA research missions TRACE, SOHO,
STEREO and SDO.
We adopted STEREO as our mission in 2007-2008 because we were captivated by the images we saw from the two perspectives of STEREO's satellites. In 2008-2009 we took on TRACE as our mission because we were interested in the unique and detailed images captured of the Sun's transition region and corona. For our 2009-2010 mission, we chose SDO because we were astonished by the amount of data that will be collected, enough to fill a CD every 36 seconds, which will be analyzed to help scientists better understand and predict solar storms. 2010-2011 was the year we decided to go back
to the beginning and complete the website with the first and most monumental
mission, SOHO. We also went into more detail about Solar Cycles which, in a sense,
completes the whole cycle for providing information about the Sun and our
endeavors to study it. During our research, we realized the importance of these types of missions for understanding the Sun and our solar system. Hopefully some day we will see the benefits reaped when we see improved predictions of solar phenomena as well as people traveling safely to the Moon and Mars.
Our hopes are that the Endeavour program
continues so that we may continue revising and adding to this website what
has been learned each year. As a result, this site can be a
comprehensive resource for middle school-aged students who are interested in
learning about NASA's missions and our Solar System. |
